CARNAVAL!

Every year, musical bloco parties take place in the streets in the day-time during the four-day festival of spontaneous fun that is carnival. The music played by Sargento Pimenta bloco might sound familiar to British ears, although it has a distinctly Brazilian rhythm and the words are sung in an accent different fromn that of the Beatles! Ten musicians and 110 drummers, many dressed as Sergeant Pepper, draw crowds of around 50,000 at carnival time. The other bloco plays samba to revelers in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro.
